The first day of geeky goodness kicked off with a bang, or should I say Cumberbang! San Diego Comic-Con opened its doors to over one hundred thousand people on Thursday, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite superheroes, doctors and time travelers and The Daily Quirk was on hand to bring you the highlights of the Penguins of Madagascar panel. The focus of the panel was very much on the immensely talented, Benedict Cumberbatch, who made his Comic-Con debut, but he shared the stage with fellow Penguins of Madagascar star and amazing talent in his own right, John Malkovich, and moderator Craig Ferguson.
During the panel Cumberbatch spoke about season four of Sherlock, Doctor Strange, and working on an animation film, Penguins of Madagascar. He appeared very surprised by the love and support that was aimed at him during the panel. He seemed a bit nervous at first, mentioning it was his first time at the event. He eventually got used to the attention and dove right into the questions his dedicated fans were asking.
The best answer of the panel had to be when Craig Ferguson asked if he liked animation. Cumberbatch replied, “I like to use my body.” Shrieks from the audience could be heard loud and clear. Ferguson was referring to the animation on Cumberbatch’s new film, Penguins of Madagascar, but the crowd loved his response regardless.
The lucky fans who were able to ask questions seemed just as nervous as Cumberbatch, asking the same questions just reworded when given the opportunity, but who can blame them. The majority of questions revolved around what was his preparation was like for his role in Penguins of Madagascar compared to doing stage or television acting. The Sherlock star was also asked, “What made you want to play Classified?” He replied, “To work with the penguins really!” and erupted the whole room into laughter. After prompting a fan to ask him about Sherlock for a change of pace, Cumberbatch was asked if he would return to Comic-con next year with the hit show to which he replied “Nothing is impossible.”
The last fan question was, “If you could play any superhero, who would it be?” John Malkovich going for the laughs answered “Lois Lane” while Cumberbatch first joked with a large grin that he would like to play “Normal Nurse,” seriously playing into the Doctor Strange casting rumors, and then went on to add his real choice would be Batman.
This was only the beginning for the panels at SDCC. Stay tuned; The Daily Quirk will keep you covered on every aspect of this year’s event!
